Experiential learning emphasizes the
central role of experience for learning processes. Hence in Kolb's Experiential
Learning Theory (Kolb, 1984) experiential learning is defined as "the
process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.”
Kolb’s model of experiential learning
suggests four stages. The first stage provides learners with a concrete
experience, and then they reflect on the experience, conceptualize their
experience and then test their new concepts/knowledge in a new situation.

learning courses can help students to develop key skills needed for a
successful career.
Soft
Skills
Soft skills, often referred to as key
competencies, are difficult to develop through standard educational curricula,
but grow naturally through interaction with others and participation in
real-world activities.
Soft skills include social competencies,
communication and conflict management skills as well as leadership development.
These are important skills students need to learn and that’s why education
needs to go beyond academics in order to prepare students for a working
environment of increasing complexity.

firsthand experience resorting to a whole sequence of outdoor educational
methods such as problem solving activities, hence leading the students through
the experiential learning cycle to develop soft skills. As such all courses
complement academic education and are an ideal kick-off for any humanitarian
student enterprises, overseas expeditions or CAS projects.
